The Farm is a building that produces Food, which is used to train troops. Upgrading it increases the rate at which Food is produced, as well as the amount of Food it can hold. Compared to farm Islands of your castle level, your main Farms will produce far less and would normally not be worth bothering to upgrade, however having high level farms is also a pre-requisite to upgrading your Granaries, which are much more important.
